AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellowship

Program Summary

The AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellows work for 10 weeks during the summer as reporters, researchers, and production assistants in mass media organizations nationwide. Fellows collaborate with media professionals at radio and television stations, newspapers, and magazines. As part of their job, the student-scientists and their host-journalists strive to make science news easy for the public to understand.

The fellowship program is designed to enhance coverage of science-related issues in the media in order to improve public understanding and appreciation of science and technology. Fellows have the opportunity to observe and participate in the process by which events and ideas become news, improve their communication skills by learning to describe complex technical subjects in a manner understandable to the lay public, and increase their understanding of editorial decision making and the way in which information is effectively disseminated. The program has supported more than 500 Fellows.

Criteria:

Application Form
Applicants must be enrolled as college or university students (in their senior year, or in any graduate or post graduate level) in the natural, physical, health, engineering, computer, or social sciences or mathematics in order to apply.
Applicants must apply for the summer fellowship within one year after graduation or defense of their thesis. Students enrolled in English, journalism, science journalism, or other non-technical fields are not eligible for these fellowships.
Successful applicants will attend an orientation at AAAS headquarters at the beginning of the summer and a wrap-up session at the end of the summer. They will prepare reports on the progress of their fellowships throughout their placement.

AAAS typically selects from 15-20 Mass Media Fellows each summer. Fellows are provided a weekly stipend of $450 as well as travel expenses to and from AAAS and their sites

Program Summary

Objectives:

The purpose of this undergraduate research training program is to encourage promising students from all disciplines, including women and members of minority groups underrepresented in the sciences, to consider research careers while supporting the highest quality scientific investigation broadly related to cardiovascular disease and stroke

. Science Focus:

Funding is available for research broadly related to cardiovascular function and disease, stroke, or to related clinical, basic science, and public health problems. Candidates should be interested in basic, epidemiological and/or clinical disciplines that bear on cardiovascular and stroke problems. The extent to which the focus of the project is related to CVD and/or stroke is an important factor that will be considered. However, the applicant is not required to be a part of cardiovascular/stroke-oriented laboratory, clinic or department.

The laboratory/research site sponsor and institution are responsible for disclosing the nature of research and activities taking place where the student will be conducting research, and the safety or health-hazards/risks which are known or reasonably likely to be encountered. Students are responsible for learning and following appropriate safety procedures.

Students will not receive college credit for their summer research activities. Therefore, participation in the program will not appear on an official transcript from the institution where the student is assigned.

Trainee Stipend/Salary: $4,000 for the summer research experience ($400/per week)

Target Audience
At the time of application, the undergraduate student must:
-Be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate degree program in either a four-year college or university, or a two year institution with plans to transfer to a four-year college or university by the fall semester immediately following the summer program.
-Have junior or senior academic status in the fall of given year. Students who will graduate in September or before are not eligible.
-Have completed at least four semesters or six quarters of any combination of the following courses by May, preceding the summer fellowship; Biological sciences (biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, physiology or lab) and/or Physics and/or Chemistry (inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry or lab).
-Have completed at least one quarter of college level or AP credit calculus, statistics, computational methods or computer science by May, preceding the summer fellowship.

Program Summary

This clinical shadowing program identifies minority medical students who may have a specific interest in services related to substance abuse treatment/prevention and provide a setting where the student can work closely with a mentor who specializes in addiction psychiatry for one month.

Ten medical students will spend one month during their summer break working with a mentor at a designated site where they will get a hands-on look at how psychiatrists treat patients and participate in an interactive didactic experiential learning program.

Program Goals:
The goals of the program are to cultivate medical student interest in serving minority and underserved populations and to recruit minorities into psychiatry. It is designed to expose ethnic minority medical students to a setting where they can work closely with a psychiatrist mentor who specializes in addiction psychiatry. Mentors and sites are selected where there is an approved substance abuse training program and a significant number of substance abuse patients are from minority and underserved groups.
The work settings will be chosen on the basis of their availability and emphasis on working clinically with or studying underserved minority populations and issues of co-occurring disorders, substance abuse treatment and prevention and mental health disparity. Most will be inner-city or rural settings. Emphasis will also be placed on programs which are certified by the Accreditation Council in General Medical Education (ACGME), although the program is not limited to these. This program will not only provide a role model, but also a positive view of how important psychiatric services, particularly addiction psychiatry are to minority populations. The student will be required not only to shadow their mentor but also have a one to two hour one-on-one supervision per week. The mentors and mentees will be encouraged to keep in contact after the summer experience.

Program Summary

The ASM Undergraduate Research Capstone Program (UR-Capstone) is the successor program to the ASM-Microbiology Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program, formerly the Minority Undergraduate Research Fellowship program from several years ago.

The goal of this program is to �fulfill the later stages of undergraduate professional development� for underrepresented minority students (URM). This program seeks to enhance the presentation skills of students after their research experiences. The ASM Undergraduate Research Capstone Program (UR-Capstone) will focus on enhancing presentations and networking skills, and provide students with resources to transition to disciplinary scientific meetings.

Prospective applicants must have conducted research in microbiology prior to applying to the UR-Capstone.

Funding
The UR-Capstone program is supported by funds provided by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). The awards package includes:
-Up to $1500 travel support will be provided for students who will attend the ASM Presentation Institute and present the results of their research project at the 2014 ASM General Meeting. Travel support will cover airfare, hotel accommodations, and the ASM General Meeting registration
-Travel funds are contingent upon acceptance of an abstract for the ASM General Meeting
-Two-year ASM student membership

Preference will be given to juniors and seniors.
Applicants must:
-Be U.S. citizen or Permanent U.S. resident
-Be enrolled as full-time matriculating undergraduate student during the 2013-2014 academic years. (Freshmen with college level research experience, sophomores, juniors, or seniors who will not graduate before December 2013)
-Be from an underrepresented minority group (groups include African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, and Pacific Islanders), a community college, a minority serving institution, a first generation college student or non-traditional student
-Have conducted research in the microbiological sciences at a U.S institution (host mentor is not required to be an ASM member, but recommended)
-Have a strong interest in obtaining a research career and post-graduate training in research within the microbiological sciences
-Be accepted to present a poster or oral presentation at the 2014 ASM General Meeting

Program Summary

The ASM Undergraduate Research Fellowship (URF) is aimed at highly competitive students who wish to pursue graduate careers (Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D) in microbiology. Students will have the opportunity to conduct full time research at their home institutions with an ASM member and present research results at the ASM General Meeting the following year.

Students will:

Conduct a research project for a minimum of 10 weeks beginning in the summer of 2011
Work with faculty mentors who are ASM members and who are employed at the students home institutions, and
Submit a research abstract for presentation at the 2012 ASM General Meeting. (Should the opportunity to present research at the General Meeting conflict with graduation, then applicants should contact ASM).

Funding
Funding for the ASM Undergraduate Research Fellowship program is provided by the American Society for Microbiology.

The Fellowship provides:

The ASH Hematology Opportunities for the Next-Generation of Research Scientists Award (HONORS) will contribute to the development of the next generation of hematologists by supporting talented medical students and residents to conduct hematology research. The award program has the following objectives:

-Support the conduct of hematology research by medical students and residents. -Introduce medical students and residents to the hematology research community. -Encourage medical students and residents to continue research careers in hematology.

The Hematology Opportunities for the Next-Generation of Research Scientists Award is intended for medical students and residents (residents are defined as trainees who have not yet entered a hematology-related training program) in the United States, Canada, or Mexico with an interest in hematology research. The award will provide the recipient with a $5,000 stipend to conduct either a short hematological research project for a minimum of three months, or a long hematological research project between three and 12 months. The stipend will be distributed in installments, the last of which is dependent upon the receipt of the final report submitted by the recipient. All recipients will also receive $1,000 each year for two years to support attendance at the ASH Annual Meeting.

Program Summary

Established in 1999, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund/ ASTMH Postdoctoral Fellowship in Tropical Infectious Diseases supports career development of physicianscientists focused on infectious diseases of the developing world. This unique fellowship provides funding for individuals to conduct research in tropical infectious diseases (and, on occasion, other clinical conditions unique to tropical medicine). It is designed to stimulate or sustain interest in research in tropical infectious diseases by individuals who are planning academic or other career paths ultimately focused on clinical research relevant to tropical or developing areas of the world.

The Fellowship consists of two years of support at $65,000 USD per year to cover travel, stipend, fringe benefits, health insurance and capacity development at the overseas site. The Fellowship does not allow for indirect cost. Funds will be distributed to the applicant�s home institution. Subsequent allocation of funds will be the responsibility of the applicant�s home institution.

Application Information

Open to individuals with an academic appointment of fellow proposing to perform research in tropical infectious diseases. In addition to postdoctoral infectious disease fellows, applicants who have completed training in other clinical specialties relevant to tropical medicine (e.g., internal medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN) are encouraged to apply. The fellowship is not intended for students, pre-doctoral candidates or faculty-level applicants. In addition, it is not intended to provide funding for overseas clinical electives or experiences.

Particular consideration will be given to:
� North American clinician-scientists enrolled in (or accepted by) a fellowship program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and those accredited through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
� Applicants seeking support for their third (research) year of fellowship training
� ASTMH post-doctoral student members

Since a minimum of three months of each funded year must be spent conducting research overseas, applicants working toward board eligibility must obtain approval from their fellowship program director before applying for this award. If the period covered by this award is to be considered toward board eligibility, the recipient must have a continuity clinic at the overseas site (and the program director must notify the ACGME concerning the integration of this clinic into their fellowship program).

During a 10 week full-time placement in a Mayoral office or agency, Fellows will be assigned to projects that focus on a myriad of public policy issues and challenges. Mayoral Fellows will complete their projects under the direction of senior level government officials and will be provided with immediate and direct feedback. Program Summary

This eight-week summer program for graduating high school seniors is offered by the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, one of the nation's leading cancer research and treatment centers.

The program introduces interested and qualified young Texans to a research environment and provides firsthand experiences in the varied career opportunities available in the biomedical sciences. A total of 20 students will be selected to participate in this eight-week program.

Curriculum

Students selected for the program are given a rare opportunity to conduct a research project in one of the biomedical disciplines under the guidance of a full-time member of the MD Anderson faculty. Emphasis is placed on the importance of the basic principles that form the foundation for scientific investigation.

During the program, students work in MD Anderson laboratories five days a week, from 8:00 am to 5:00 PM The majority of this time is spent doing actual hands-on work that provides the students with a clear knowledge of exactly what it means to be a biomedical researcher as well as an understanding of the discipline required.

The laboratory experience is supplemented by two seminars a week presented by faculty on a wide variety of research topics. Students also tour MD Anderson and other Texas Medical Center facilities to see ongoing activities in different areas.

At the end of the program, each student will prepare an oral and written report of his or her activities for presentation to fellow students and his or her research sponsors.

Qualifications

To qualify for the program, students must have completed their senior year at a Texas high school prior to the start of the program. Other qualifications include a demonstration of scientific aptitude, a record of high academic achievement, excellent moral character and interest in the program.

Nomination for the program may be made by a high school counselors or science faculty member. Only one student may be nominated from each Texas high school.

Program Summary

This program is intended to provide the highest quality experience for first-year medical school students pursuing interests in oncology research.

While the program has traditionally been designed for students who have completed their first year of medical school, highly qualified undergraduates majoring in the health science fields may be considered.

The students are paid a weekly stipend of $300 for a minimum of six weeks or maximum of ten weeks. A limited amount of funds are available as reimbursement for travel and housing on a case-by-case basis for those students from outside the greater Los Angeles area. While participating in the program, students will be expected to attend a lecture series held at the hospital on aspects of pediatric oncology designed specifically for them and will be encouraged to attend other scientific lectures in their area of research.

Each year, the program's executive committee reviews and selects approximately 20 applicants by early March.

Students are asked to designate five areas of interest on their application. This information is then considered when matching accepted students with their mentors. Potential mentors review the accepted students' applications in their selected areas of interest and make selections from this pool. The mentors may then contact the students directly or through the Summer Oncology Program Coordinator. If an accepted student wishes to work with a specific mentor, the Coordinator will inform the faculty member of the interest and forward to him/her the student's application for review.

After a match has been made, the mentor approves the fellow's project and supervises the student throughout the fellowship period. Program Summary

The Access program of Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences (WCGS) is a summer internship program that trains underserved college students in the biomedical sciences.Interns gain hands-on experience in a biomedical research laboratory and are encouraged to apply to PhD programs. Selected students are placed in laboratories at the Weill Cornell Medical College under the mentorship of experienced faculty members.

In addition to the laboratory experience, students attend lectures and discussions aimed at enhancing their understanding of the current status of biomedical research, the pathways available for entering research careers, and the range of available career opportunities. Students also participate in weekly journal clubs, attend workshops that teach them how to prepare for interviews and seminars, and take part in social activities.

Each student receives a generous stipend of $3,000 and up to $300 for travel expenses. On-campus housing is provided free of charge to those who are not from the New York City area.

Program Summary

Four medical student research fellowships are available for 10-12 weeks of summer research training in molecular and cell biology, biomechanics, coagulation and thrombosis, and angiogenesis, with a focus on clinically relevant problems such as atherogenesis, intimal hyperplasia, prosthetic/host interactions and thrombosis. Trainees will pursue a program of intense research activity. This training program is designed to provide medical students with an initial exposure to vascular surgery research.

Students will carry out their research projects under the guidance of a faculty advisor, selected form renowned vascular researchers based at four Harvard Medical School hospitals: the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital (Boston), and the Joslin Diabetes Institute, as well as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

A $3500 stipend for the summer; appointment at Harvard Medical School as a Research Fellow in Surgery.

The Medical Research Fellows Program ("Med Fellows Program") supports a year of full-time biomedical research training for medical, dental, and veterinary students. A new initiative, the Medical Research Fellows Program at Janelia Farm, offers students with an interest in neuronal networking and/or imaging an intense year-long research training experience, living and working at the HHMI Janelia Farm Research Campus in Ashburn, Virginia in the Washington, D.C., area. Students must comply with specific eligibility and application requirements.
Year off: Stipend of $29,000. Research allowance of $5,500 for research-related enrichment activities (Med Fellows regional events, HHMI investigator meetings, scientific conferences), research-related books, and some research-related costs. Fellow�s allowance of $5,500 for health, dental and vision insurance, education-related expenses and moving expenses (up to $1,500 roundtrip if research is at an institution other than the student�s school). Program Summary

A component of The University of Texas System, MD Anderson is one of the nation's leading cancer research and treatment centers dedicated to patient care, research, education and prevention.

The purpose of this 10-week program is to interest and challenge qualified college students in biomedical research as it relates to cancer. The program provides firsthand research experience in various areas of cancer research. It also points out the varied career opportunities available in the biomedical sciences.

2011 Summer Research Program for College Students begins on May 31, 2011 and concludes on August 5, 2011.

Curriculum

Each student selected for the program is given an opportunity to conduct a research project in one of the biomedical disciplines under the guidance of a full-time member of the MD Anderson faculty. Emphasis is placed on the importance of the basic principles that form the foundation of scientific investigation.

During the program, students work in MD Anderson laboratories five days a week, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The majority of this time is spent in hands-on research. The work provides participants with a clear idea of what it means to be a biomedical researcher and the discipline required. The laboratory experience is supplemented by seminars presented by faculty on a wide variety of research topics.

At the end of the program, each student will prepare an oral and written report of his or her activities for presentation to fellow students and his or her research sponsors.

Participants in the program receive a stipend of $4,000 for the 10-week period. The stipend is not a salary; it is meant solely to subsidize students so that they may participate in the program.

Housing

Accommodations for out-of-town students are usually available in university dorms a short walking distance from MD Anderson. Students will be asked to indicate on the application if they will need housing. Responsibility for housing, however, rests solely with each student.

The Medical Student Research Program in Diabetes is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health through the NIDDK and allows medical students to conduct research under the direction of an established scientist in the areas of diabetes, hormone action, physiology, islet cell biology or obesity at an institution with one of 16 NIDDK-funded Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Centers (DERC) or Diabetes Research and Training Centers (DRTC) during the summer between the first and second year or second and third year of medical school.

The goal of the Program is to encourage medical students to consider research in diabetes and its complications as a career and to educate students about diabetes. Program Consultants will assist students in selecting an appropriate research project and preceptor. Prior research experience is not required. In addition to working on his/her own research project, each student will veiw a web-cast series of seminars addressing various clinical and research aspects of diabetes mellitus and its complications. All students will present their results at a research symposuim in Nashville, TN on August 3-4, 2011 (travel funds provided).

Students will spend 9-12 weeks working on their research project at a Diabetes Center and receive a weekly stipend. Commencement dates and conclusion for the program are reasonably flexible, but you must attend the research symposium on August 3-4, 2011.

The Medical Student Summer Fellowship program is an eight-week research program offered to first year medical students who have a career interest as a physician-scientist in the field of oncology and/or related biomedical sciences.

Funded since 1977 by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), this eight-week research program is offered to medical students who have a career interest as a physician-scientist in the field of oncology and/or related biomedical sciences. This program grants students who have completed their first- or second-year at a US medical school accredited by the LCME (Liaison Committee on Medical Education) or COCA (Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation) the opportunity to conduct basic laboratory or clinical research mentored by Memorial Sloan-Kettering faculty. Additional support is provided by the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Office of Diversity Programs in Clinical Care, Research, and Training, the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Brain Tumor Center, and the Office of Faculty Development. Students in the program will:

-Gain clinical or laboratory research experience mentored by Memorial Sloan-Kettering faculty
-Interact with Memorial Sloan-Kettering physicians, PhD investigators, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students.
-Attend a weekly education lecture series presented by world-renowned Memorial Sloan-Kettering faculty
-Attend additional institutional lectures, departmental conferences, and lab meetings
-Present their summer research to fellowship peers and Memorial Sloan-Kettering faculty during the final week of the program

Participants receive a stipend of $5,800 for eight weeks participation in the program. Memorial Sloan-Kettering does not provide housing to participants. The NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP) is an Agency-wide fellowship program (also called GSRP Training Grants in what follows) for graduate study leading to masters or doctoral degrees in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering related to NASA research and development. In 2011, NASA is expanding GSRP to include students that are interested in becoming teachers or education administrators. This twelve month award requires students to participate in a 10-week NASA Headquarters or Center-based research experience at HQ or Center extending the GSRP Fellowship.

The goal of NASA's GSRP is to cultivate additional research ties to the academic community, to help meet the continuing needs of the Nation's aeronautics and space workforce requirements by increasing the number of highly trained scientists and engineers in aeronautics and space-related disciplines, and to meet the Nation's need to increase the number of highly trained teachers.

The program will support approximately 140 graduate students annually. NASA scientists and engineers evaluate applications on the basis of academic transcripts, research proposals, faculty advisor recommendations, and the proposed utilization of NASA center or university research facilities.

Program Summary

To increase the opportunities for medical students to have a research experience in medical imaging and to encourage them to consider academic radiology as an important option for their future. Recipients will gain experience in defining objectives, developing research skills and testing hypotheses before making their final choices for residency training programs. Students are expected to undertake a research project requiring full time efforts for at least 10 weeks under the guidance of a scientific advisor during personal/vacation time or during a research elective approved by their medical school.

Amount: $3,000 to be matched by the sponsoring department ($6,000 total), as a stipend for the medical student. Funds are intended to secure protected time for the recipient and may not be used for non-personnel research expenses.

The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene has established a fellowship to memorialize Robert E. Shope, M.D., a past president and beloved member of the Society. The intent of the Robert E. Shope International Fellowship in Infectious Diseases is to provide international training opportunities in arbovirology and emerging diseases for those with an M.D., D.V.M., Ph.D. or related doctoral degree.

Individuals with doctoral-level degrees who seek fellowship funding to support travel, living and research expenses to work in laboratories in the tropics to pursue studies in arbovirology and/or emerging tropical infectious diseases.

The award recipient will be selected by the Robert E. Shope International Fellowship committee and will provide $25,000 to help defray travel costs, living expenses and/or research abroad. The Robert Shope Fellowship recipient will be required to prepare a report describing his or her experiences, with the potential to be invited to make a presentation at the society's annual meeting.

Full-time post-doctoral fellows (Ph.D., D.V.M., M.D. degrees or the equivalent) with positions at North American institutions who study any tropical infectious disease in arbovirology and/or emerging tropical infectious diseases. Comentors must be identified both at a North American institution and at an international institution or site. Sponsoring North American institutions are responsible for assuring that the proposed studies are compliant with contemporary regulations, including those related to human subjects and pathogens. A one-page research plan should be submitted. Applicants should be sponsored by an ASTMH member.

Expand your horizons in the care and treatment of the cancer patient by participating in state-of-the-art clinical research. Explore the mysteries of the cancer cell by participating in a basic scientific research program. Or participate in both! Special emphasis is placed on cancer prevention through lectures and practical experiences. Program Summary

The Sarnoff Fellowship Program offers medical students enrolled in accredited U.S. medical schools the opportunity to spend a year conducting intensive work in a biomedical research laboratory in the United States, other than the medical school in which they are enrolled. Fellows are selected on the basis of a national competition. Sarnoff seeks individuals with demonstrated intellectual and academic achievement, as well as leadership ability.

Although applicants may have prior research experience, applications are also encouraged from students without extensive prior research experience. Applicants enrolled in an MD/PhD program will not be eligible for a Sarnoff Fellowship.

Applications are encouraged from second and third year medical students. Fourth year medical students are required to submit an official letter from their medical schools granting graduation deferment.

There are no citizenship requirements for application, but those who are not U.S. citizens must have and maintain an appropriate visa. The Foundation will not handle visa matters for applicants.

Fellowship awardees receive these benefits:

$30,000 stipend
Allowance up to $5,500 for travel to select a Preceptor and Fellowship laboratory, moving expenses, health insurance and computer equipmen
Financial support to attend the Sarnoff Annual Scientific meetings, American Heart Association Scientific Sessions, American Society for Clinical Investigation Annual Meeting and NIH Clinical Investigator Student Trainee Forum
Funds for travel to present a paper (up to $1350), based on Fellowship research, at two national conferences

The Summer Program in Obesity, Diabetes and Nutrition Training (SPORT) is an 8-10 week research internship for medical students only. The Program offers an intensive summer research experience and mentorship to successful applicants, as well as a stipend of approximately $5,400. Housing and transportation are not included. Tentative dates for the 2013 program are Tuesday, May 28 � Friday, August 2, 2013.

The purpose of the SPORT program is to inspire passion toward research in diabetes, obesity and nutrition by providing a mentored summer research experience for medical students as well as ongoing career, academic, research and clinical mentoring throughout medical school, with the ultimate goal of preparing participants for placement in competitive residency training programs leading to careers as independent physician scientists. Under the mentorship of one of the SPORT Program faculty, students will select an interesting research question in an obesity/nutrition-related area, and will work in the laboratory and/or clinical research setting to learn and perform state-of-the-art research to answer that question.

Students will be required to present a summary of their work in a peer group setting and will receive a Certificate of Completion upon satisfactory completion of the internship. In addition to intensive hands-on research experience, students will attend research conferences and seminars as well as weekly core lectures presented by faculty designed specifically for this program. The lectures will cover broad topics in diabetes, nutrition and obesity, and related chronic diseases. Program participants will also have the opportunity to shadow clinical faculty in both the inpatient and outpatient clinic setting (University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Endocrine Clinic, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, etc.).

Program Summary

The Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine�s Maryland Imaging Research Technologies Laboratory (MIRTL) announces the availability of two (2) fellowship opportunities for first- and second-year medical students. This 10-week program will provide a mentored research practicum in the emerging field of imaging informatics, which looks at the intersection of medical imaging and computational innovations in image acquisition, reconstruction, display, interpretation, and results communication. The stipend will be $4,000, with half paid at the beginning of the program and the remainder remitted at the end of the program when all requirements have been met.

Selection of Mentor and Development of Project: Research projects developed by selected faculty have been competitively reviewed by a departmental committee created specifically for this purpose. The projects were designed to be productive and ensure to the greatest degree possible that it will be publishable and/or presented at a national meeting. Students must have sufficient data collected to write an abstract for UM SoM�s Student Research Forum in early August each year and Medical Student Research Day in October.

Program Summary

The Viet Nam Medical Assistance Program (VNMAP) began as an inspiring vision from two Vietnamese professional students at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and the Philadelphia School of Osteopathic Medicine who wanted to improve the health and awareness of the Vietnamese population. In 2007, their dream became a reality when the first medical mission served at Dien Khanh Hospital in the southern Vietnamese province of Khanh Hoa. The mission team has grown since then from 11 members to a 20-member team this past summer. The 2009 group traveled to nine different sites in the Lam Dong Province operating clinics to treat and educate the underprivileged population. Over the course of nine days, the team saw over 1,700 patients with conditions ranging from anemia and malnutrition to arthritis and scabies.

VNMAP is developing exponentially to include an ever-increasing number of students and professionals dedicated to providing health education to the Vietnamese community in the United States and Viet Nam. The organization’s ultimate goal is to make continual improvements each year that steadily enrich the lives of the residents in rural areas of Viet Nam who do not receive adequate healthcare. In reaching our goal, our emphasis is on creating educational opportunities for our team members that will be beneficial to their professional aspirations. We strive to improve leadership skills and promote teamwork through assigned projects and committees. The medical mission provides learning opportunities relevant to medical care through working in clinics and visiting hospitals. Additionally, a better understanding of the local health system and public health in Vietnam is acquired through participation in our ongoing health survey.

As a volunteer during the 2008 summer mission and a current Director on the Board of Directors, I have a firm belief in this organization’s ability to improve healthcare and awareness in Viet Nam. I am proud of the progress that we have made and the people that we have helped. In forming our team for the upcoming mission for the summer of 2011, we are looking forward to gaining new members who have the dedication and spirit to help advance the impact that the Viet Nam Medical Assistance Program will generate.
