School of Medicine dean E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA held a presentation November 29th to kick off the school's bicentennial year. Guests included past deans Dr. John Murray Dennis and Dr. Donald E. Wilson, as well as a surprise appearance from the school's very first dean, John Beale Davidge (played by Alan Wade). "Dr. Davidge" was amazed at the accomplishments that have taken place at his school since its inception 200 years ago. (See photos from the ceremony)

Following remarks by the dignitaries present, Dean Reece unveiled a countdown clock that is marking the hours left until January 1, 2007. "People ask me when exactly our anniversary is, and I tell them it's the whole year," said the dean. "We will celebrating throughout 2007."

The first of these celebrations took place on the lawn of Davidge Hall, where the staff and students were invited to gather and enjoy a cake in the shape of Davidge Hall made by celebrity baker Duff Goldman of Charm City Cakes and the Food Network's 'Ace of Cakes' show. Penny candy from the days of the school's inception overflowed on tables, and posters of Davidge Hall past and present were given out to mark the special occasion.

The bicentennial website also made its debut today. You can find it at www.sombicentennial.umaryland.edu.
