As part of the School of Medicine’s Bicentennial Celebration, members of the Graduate Program in Life Sciences (GPILS) and the UMB Staff Senate joined Tom McHugh, Program Manager of GPILS and UMB Staff Senator, in organizing a special night of activities for the children and family members staying at the Baltimore Ronald McDonald House. On the evening of March 20, the children and their families were treated to a "Make Your Own Ice Cream Sundae & Games Night" with former Orioles second baseman Bill Ripken. Ripken is now Co-Owner and Executive Vice President of Ripken Baseball, which he runs in partnership with brother Cal. Mr. Ripken arrived with his an armload of baseball hats and other gifts for the children. Over the course of the next two hours he visited with the families, signed autographs, posed for photos and joined the children in the game room for many rounds of air hockey and other games. It was a wonderful evening for all. Look for the Ripkens to be involved in another bicentennial presentation when Cal Ripken Jr. takes the stage at the Hippodrome April 26, 2007 to speak on "The Enduring Power of Leadership". Admission is free, but tickets are required and can be requested by calling (410) 706-2007. |
