Stephen Bartlett, MD, is the Recipient of the First Peter Angelos Distinguished Professorship in Surgery

An investiture ceremony was held March 2, 2010 in Westminster Hall to award Stephen Bartlett, MD, professor and chair, Department of Surgery, the first Peter Angelos Distinguished Professorship in Surgery. Mr. Angelos is a well-known local lawyer as well as Chairman of the Board and CEO of the Baltimore Orioles. He is also a member of the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Board of Visitors.

"An endowed professorship is indicative of superior performance in the classroom, the laboratory and in the clinical setting," said E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, Acting President of the University of Maryland, Baltimore and Dean of the School of Medicine. "In the world of academia, endowed professorships are a coveted and universally recognized accolade, signaling a colleague at the top of his field."

Angelos was proud to sponsor Dr. Bartlett. “I’m here to acknowledge the great record of my good friend Steve and the contributions he has made to this institution,” said Angelos. “Truthfully, he’s just at the midpoint, I think. There are many more great things to come from this very fine doctor. We all respect Steve for his contributions, both medically and to the community at large, and it is my privilege and honor to have this chance to salute him.”

Dr. Bartlett is determined to live up to the high standards expected of an endowed professor, particularly one who is a department chair. “I will dedicate myself to raising the bar for our department,” he proclaimed. “Together, let’s make the Department of Surgery the best in the United States.”
