The Department of Medicine welcomed a special guest for Grand Rounds on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 – E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, vice president for Medical Affairs, University of Maryland, and the John Z. and Akiko K. Bowers Distinguished Professor and Dean of the School of Medicine. Dean Reece’s presentation was entitled “Unraveling the Syndrome of Diabetic Embryopathy.”
In his lecture, Dean Reece detailed the research his lab has been conducting into the prevalence of birth defects in women with diabetes. Studying this problem at the molecular level, Dr. Reece and his research team have been trying to determine interventions that might be effective in lowering the rate of these defects. These interventions included dietary changes, as well as supplements such as safflower oil, inositol and vitamins C and E.
After his presentation, Dean Reece took questions from the audience of faculty members and residents regarding his research.
