University of Maryland School of Medicine Dean E. Albert Reece, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., has appointed William E. Tucker, MBA, CPA, as the new Associate Dean for Practice Plan Affairs at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Mr. Tucker will remain as Chief Corporate Officer of the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s faculty practice plan, Faculty Physicians Inc. (FPI), a role in which he has served since 2006.
In his new role as Associate Dean for Practice Plan Affairs, Mr. Tucker will oversee the practice plan’s enterprise throughout Maryland. He will work to grow and expand the practice plan, including adding multi-specialty sites throughout the state. He will also promote the highest level of excellence in service throughout the faculty physicians’ offices, and monitor clinical productivity. Mr. Tucker will also identify new opportunities to improve the efficiency of practice operations.
“The faculty practice plan is a crucial component of our mission here at the University of Maryland, which is to provide world class clinical care as well as conducting groundbreaking research and fostering outstanding educational programs,” says Dean Reece, who also is Vice President for Medical Affairs at the University of Maryland and John Z. and Akiko K. Bowers Distinguished Professor at the School of Medicine. “Mr. Tucker will work to strengthen and expand our practice plan’s reach throughout the state of Maryland, and the region and beyond, growing our efforts both geographically and in the many areas of advanced specialty care that our faculty offer. Our goal is to bring our excellent clinical care to as many citizens of the state of Maryland as possible, giving them access to the top-tier expertise of our physicians. Bill has been an outstanding leader and colleague throughout his many years with the University of Maryland, and I feel confident that he will lead our practice plan to even greater levels of excellence in the future.”
Mr. Tucker joined the University of Maryland in 2000 as Director of Planning and Business Development for the faculty practice plan, then called University Physicians Inc. In 2006, Mr. Tucker was promoted to his current position as Chief Corporate Officer and Assistant Dean for Practice Plan Affairs. He is responsible for overall administrative and operational performance of FPI, including direct leadership of revenue cycle management, human resources, information technology, finance, business development and strategic planning. He leads multiple initiatives including implementation of physician performance incentive models, service excellence and patient access.
“Although these are challenging times for clinical services and for medical schools, I am very excited to be part of our great organization as we look to the future. With challenges come new opportunities and I consider myself to be very fortunate to work with a great group of physician and staff leaders as we navigate the road ahead,” Mr. Tucker said.
Mr. Tucker earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration, graduating Magna Cum Laude, from Clarion University in 1978. He went on to earn a master’s in business administration from Purdue University in 1979. He also completed the Executive Development Program at Indiana University in 1985.
Mr. Tucker is a Certified Public Accountant in Indiana and also a member of many distinguished committees in his field, including the Academic Practice Plan Directors of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC); the American College of Healthcare Executives; the AAMC Group on Faculty Practice; and the Maryland Association of CPAs.
