This national Center seeks to strengthen policies and programs in school mental health to improve learning and promote success for America's youth. Through participation in and development of a broad and growing Community of Practice, the Center analyzes diverse sources of information, develops and disseminates policy briefs, and promotes the utilization of knowledge and actions to advance successful and innovative mental health policies and programs in schools. The Center works with the wide range of stakeholders invested in integrated approaches to reduce barriers to student learning, including families, youth, educators, mental health and other child system staff, advocates, legislators, researchers and government officials.

The Center was established through a partnership between the Missouri Department of Mental Health and the MU Department of Educational, School and Counseling Psychology to respond to the shift in the priorities of federal and state agencies pertaining to policy, practice and research concerning child and adolescent mental health. The center collaborates with diverse stakeholders and programs across the nation to address the mental health needs of youth. The National Association of School Psychologists represents and supports school psychology through leadership to enhance the mental health and educational competence of all children.  NASP provides school psychologists with professional development and resources to inform their work. They also provide resources for families and educators to help improve the mental health and academic success of youth.

The Research and Training Center for Children’s Mental Health works to strengthen the empirical foundation for effective systems of care, and improve services for children with serious emotional or behavioral disorders and their families. This mission is addressed through an integrated set of research, training, consultation, and dissemination activities. A key school mental health resource was developed by Deputy Directors Duchnowski and Kutash, and Nancy Lynn: School-Based Mental Health: An Empirical Guide for Decision-Makers. This initiative is funded by The Baltimore City Health Department and is led by faculty and staff from the University of Maryland’s Center for School Mental Health (CSMH). This website has practical and easy-to-access mental health resources for clinicians, educators, families, and students. Resources provided offer information on best practice in school mental health and have a particular focus on advancing evidence-based practice.  

School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA)

The School Social Work Association of America is dedicated to promoting the profession of School Social Work and the professional development of School Social Workers in order to enhance the educational experience of students and their families.  SSWAA offers a wealth of resources and opportunities for training including an annual national conference for school social workers.

Together, the IDEA Partnership and the Center for School Mental Health (CSMH) have created a mechanism for the exchange of information and the ability to pursue a shared agenda. A website, www.sharedwork.org, sponsored by the IDEA Partnership offers a mechanism for communication and collaboration. It provides a space for the National Community of Practice on Collaborative School Behavioral Health and its 10 associated Practice Groups to work together to advance school mental health. Through the website, there is a listserv mechanism that offers opportunities for public communication, community announcements, summaries of practice group work, and requests for comments. The website assists Practice Groups with achieving their goals including: defining critical issues, creating a repository of key online documents, communicating and active collaborating to advance topics, defining new shared work, developing a conference strand for the CSMH’s 12th Annual Conference on School Mental Health, and creating at least one tool or document for the field that is collaboratively developed.

The online educational specialist degree with a focus in mental health is designed for professionals who work with children and adolescents in the schools, and have completed a master's degree program in a related field. This program is designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills to address the significant mental health issues facing today's schools. Professionals will gain awareness of mental health issues and how they affect student academic performance and social interaction. Professionals will also learn skills to promote positive mental health, encourage positive social emotional development and increase student learning. In addition, the program is designed to provide professionals with the awareness and skills to promote their own resilience and mental well-being.
