Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Welcome to the 16th Annual Meeting of the Institute of Human Virology (IHV), scheduled for Sunday, September 14 through Wednesday, September 17. The Annual Meeting will feature themes on HIV Cure Research; HIV Pathogenesis; HIV Structural Biology, Immunology and Vaccines; Advances in Clinical, Prevention and Public Health Research, and a cross-cutting session on the Molecular and Immunological Insights from Cancer Biology and Treatment. In addition, Mark Kaplan, MD, from the University of Michigan Health System, will be presenting the first Reinhard Kurth Memorial Lecture. To provide opportunities for junior investigators to present we are emphasizing submission of research abstracts through our web portal. So please share with your faculty this opportunity. As is our tradition, scientific leaders at the cutting edge of new advances will be presenting Special Lectures on important, emerging topics.

For 2014, our meeting returns to Baltimore and will be held at the Sheraton Inner Harbor Hotel located in the West Harbor area. The hotel is just a short distance from Camden Yards and M&T Stadium, the respective homes of the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens. Meeting participants will find a range of shopping, dining, and cultural venues in this bustling city locale.

This year we are proud to honor William Paul, MD, as the 2014 IHV Lifetime Achievement Awardee for Scientific Contributions to the field of immunology and pathogenesis. Dr. Paul is Chief of the Laboratory of Immunology at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), and was former director of the NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR). He is also the founding editor of the Annual Review of Immunology and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

The 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award for Public Service is presented to John Martin, PhD. As Gilead’s current Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, Dr. Martin is a leader in supporting access to life saving anti-HIV medications that, although still under patent, have been made widely and affordably available to the millions around the world infected with HIV and for prevention through Pre-exposure prophylaxis.

Lifetime Achievement Awardees will be officially recognized at our Annual Awards Gala on Tuesday, September 16th. Gala reception will begin at 6:15 pm followed by dinner at 7:00 pm.

We look forward to welcoming you to Baltimore for the 16th Annual Meeting that continues the tradition of excellent science and provocative discussion.

Sincerely,
